A Forestry England site on an old coaching route west of Lyndhurst, with some of the oldest Douglas fir trees in the New Forest, the earliest dating to about 1860. Three waymarked circular trails lead from the car park through ancient and ornamental woodland, and the longest passes a deer viewing platform where fallow deer are often seen.
Highlights
- Deer Watch trail, a 15-minute stroll to a viewpoint over the forest and meadows
- Jubilee trail past veteran trees, about 25 minutes
- Radnor trail across Bratley Water to the deer viewing platform, about 50 minutes
- Bolderwood cycle trail along the Ornamental Drive
- Site of a royal hunting lodge first recorded in 1325
Good to know
- There is no longer a deer sanctuary or feeding station here, so sightings of wild deer are never guaranteed
- BBQs and campfires are banned
- Toilets are open on a one-in-one-out basis
- Keep your distance from ponies and livestock and do not feed them
